In 79 AD, residents of a town on the coast of Italy were enjoying afternoon snacks of walnuts and dried figs when nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted after centuries of dormancy. Volcanoes existed for millennia before that well-known disaster, but these sleeping giants have rumbled in our imaginations even more since then. Follow geothermal scientist Andrés Ruzo for a journey to far-off lava fields, hidden boiling rivers, and through the fiery portals to the Earth’s core.
Andrés Ruzo is a geothermal scientist and explorer known for his work with National Geographic. He gained recognition for discovering and studying the Boiling River (Shanay-Timpishka) in the Peruvian Amazon. As a National Geographic Explorer, Ruzo has focused on geothermal phenomena and their environmental and cultural significance. His work combines scientific research with storytelling to raise awareness about conservation and indigenous knowledge. Ruzo's efforts have been featured in National Geographic documentaries and publications, highlighting the intersection of science, exploration, and environmental protection.
Ruzo holds degrees in geology and finance and will soon finish his Ph.D. in EarthSciences. He also hosted a National Geographic Latin America television show Misterios del Inframundo (Mysteries of the Underworld).

Tarrell (Holland) is an admired American painter who lives with his wife, singer Aisha (Day), and their young son, Jermaine. Tarrell’s artwork excavates beauty from the anguish of his youth, keeping past wounds at bay. His path to success is derailed by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, La’Ron (Jelks), a conscience-stricken man desperate to reconcile.
Tarrell’s mother, Joyce (Ellis-Taylor) a pious woman with a profound and joyful spirituality, hopes that Tarrell can open his heart to forgiveness, giving them all another chance at being a family. Tarrell and La’Ron learn that forgetting might be a greater challenge than forgiving in this raw and deeply moving film.
We are proud to present the 2024 Official Sundance Film Festival Selection, Exhibiting Forgiveness, returning to the Eccles Center on October 26th! Premiered at the Eccles, this powerful film follows a Black artist striving to overcome the trauma of his past through painting. Just as he’s finding success, his estranged father—a recovering addict desperate to reconcile—reenters his life. This profound story delves into family, generational healing, and the power of forgiveness. In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Park City Performing Arts has arranged this special community screening in partnership with Sundance Institute, Peace House, Mountain Mediation Center, and the Christian Center of Park City Counseling and Wellness Team.

Bill Nye – scientist, engineer, comedian, author, and inventor – is a man with a mission: to help foster a scientifically literate society, to help people everywhere understand and appreciate the science that makes our world work. Making science entertaining and accessible is something Bill has been doing most of his life.
Bill currently speaks at colleges regularly and discusses a variety of topical science matters on news and television programs such as ABC World News, NBC Nightly News, CNN, Good Morning America, MSNBC, TODAY, CBS This Morning, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and more. He fights to raise awareness of climate change and the value of critical thinking, science, and reason. Through all his work, Bill hopes to inspire people everywhere to change the world.

Behind the Gold brings the audience deep into the storyline of some of the world’s greatest Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The series of riveting fireside chat interviews will bring back memories and provide relatable life lessons.
As a kid, Ted Ligety used to rip around Park City Mountain with his brother. And while he wasn’t one of the best on the Park City Ski Team, his work ethic earned him a forerunner spot at the 2002 Olympics.
Four years later, he made the games himself, winning gold in the alpine combined at age 21. Ligety dominated giant slalom in his sport, winning five season titles. In 2013, he joined an elite group winning three World Championship gold. After failing to win a medal in 2010, he found redemption in 2014, taking giant slalom gold in one of the sport’s most talked-about second runs. Today, he’s a Deer Valley Resort ambassador, leading his family of young boys ripping around the mountain.

Throughout human history, trees have provided our most important sources of sustenance, protection, and wonder. Nalini Nadkarni, a tree canopy ecologist, has spent four decades dangling among the branches to study the ways that forests inform our daily lives. Climb into the clouds to experience the magnificent wildlife and incredible science happening in the vast, hidden worlds suspended above our heads.
Nalini Nadkarni is a National Geographic Explorer At Large, the highest distinction within the organization. She pioneered canopy access techniques to study the plants, animals, and microbes that live in the treetops. She interweaves her research on rainforest canopies with innovative public engagement.
A contributor to 150 scientific papers and books, she has cast new insights on the importance of canopy plants in ecosystem processes and the effects of human activities on forest diversity and function. Her awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the AAAS Award for Public Engagement, the National Science Foundation Award for Public Service, The Wilson Award for the Advancement of Social Justice and the Archie Carr Medal for Conservation. She is currently a professor at the University of Utah.

Cowboy Poet Darrel Holden
Darrell Holden is a proud fifth-generation rancher who raises cattle on the West Desert of Utah. He started writing cowboy poetry in 1983 while a freshman in high school. He started performing after gentle nudges by his mother, wife, and daughter. He writes about his life–humor, strife, pain, joy, and anything ranching. Darrell carries the legacy handed to him from his ancestors as a fierce defender of ranching families and the stewardship we all have with livestock and nature. Darrell finds writing to be therapeutic and healing for his heart. Married to his best friend and sweetheart, Angie, they have two amazing kids, who are both top hands. Darrell is happiest a-horseback with family and cattle.
Singer/Songwriter Kaden Miner
Raised in the Wasatch mountains of Utah, Kaden Miner is a young songwriter who focuses on telling the stories of the people who make their living from the land. Inspired by the likes of Ian Tyson, Brenn Hill, and Chris LeDoux, he paints an honest and raw picture of the West. He draws from firsthand experiences working on ranches and breaking horses to bring a personal perspective to his listeners. His music can be found on all streaming platforms, and is working towards his first recorded album. Kaden lives with his wife, Lindsay, on the Circle H ranch in Woodruff, Utah.

An aspiring collegiate ski racer, Chris Waddell’s life was transformed in a training accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Waddell never looked back, transferring his skills to become one of the greatest Paralympians ever, winning a dozen medals (11 winter, one summer), including five gold.
He also took on the responsibility of raising awareness of Para sport. He climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in his wheelchair. He was named one of People Magazine’s Most Beautiful People. His One Revolution organization has also helped showcase the sport. Today, he remains one of Paralympic sport’s most excellent ambassadors, living in Park City.

Excellence in Community: Callinish Celtic Music

Back by popular demand, join us for Women’s History Month and hear untold stories of the women of the Civil Rights. Engage with Dr. Danielle McGuire, a storyteller extraordinaire, and learn from the experiences that shaped her life into an acclaimed historian. Recognized by Oprah Winfrey, her book, At the Dark End of the Street, told the surprising history of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which began when Rosa Parks investigated the rape of Recy Taylor in 1944.
Join us for this incredible opportunity to dive into an American story everyone thinks they know. Plus, learn how a high school history teacher’s assignment helped a white girl from Wisconsin become a go-to source for the Civil Rights Movement.
Danielle McGuire, PhD, is an award-winning Civil Rights historian, public speaker and author of At the Dark End of the Street: Black Women, Rape and Resistance-a New History of the Civil Rights Movement from Rosa Parks to the Rise of Black Power (Knopf). She is the editor of Freedom Rights: New Perspectives on the Civil Rights Movement; wrote the forward for John Hersey’s Algiers Motel Incident; and has contributed chapters to many other books related to the Black Freedom Struggle. She is a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians and has appeared on PBS, CNN, MSNBC, Headline News, National Public Radio, and BookTV. Her popular essays have appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books, the Detroit Free Press, Bridge Magazine, Washington Post, Huffington Post and CNN.com. She serves as a consultant on documentary films such as The Rape of Recy Taylor and You Belong to Me: The Ruby McCollum Story. She also helps curate educational historical tours and civil rights-related curricula for secondary schools and serves on the advisory board of History Studio. She is currently at work on a book about police violence in Detroit in 1967, to be published by Knopf.
